2015 Fall Activities Guide

It’s that time of year again, when the crisp mornings and warm afternoons combine to create the most beautiful fall colors – perfect for outdoor activities! And Northeast Ohio has no shortage of great family-friendly fall activities available as we round the corner into the holiday season. Check out some of the wonderful opportunities we’ve compiled  from around the area for your family to enjoy.


Akron Boo at the Zoo: Now until October 25th, you can dress your little ghosts and goblins in their costumes for a local favorite non-scary Halloween event. Kids can take their candy passport to find all of the treat stations at the zoo! (Weekends only.) See the Akron Zoo website for times and costs.

FREE Scarecrow Day at Summit Metro Parks: Join the Summit Metro Parks for the 5th annual Scarecrow Day. Fabulous fall fun includes a scarecrow build-off, a scavenger hunt, crafts, face painting, storytelling, marshmallow roasting, raffles and a crow-calling contest. Awards will be given to the best crow callers and the top three scarecrows. To participate in the scarecrow build-off, advance registration is required. An armature, bag for the head, markers, twine and straw will be provided. The clothes and creativity are up to you! Registration for the crow calling contest will be the day of the event. ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad: View wildlife and scenery in the comfort of climate-controlled train cars. Get on and off at any station. Spend a whole day exploring or just a few hours. Or join the CVSR for special excursions like Bike Aboard, Ales on Rails, the Grape Escape, or the Polar Express. Visit the CVSR website for schedules and costs.

Kuner’s Fruit Farm: Grab the family and head out to Kuner’s, where you can pick your own apples! While you’re there, be sure to check out their award-winning cider, apple butter, honey and fresh plums!

2015 OAD DEAFair: Join the Ohio Association of the Deaf Inc., on Saturday, November 7 from 10:00a – 7:00pm at the John S. Knight Center for the OAD DEAFair. The fair is an opportunity to celebrate life and culture. Be sure to stop by the many exhibition booths and the children’s corner, watch the performances, and try your luck at a door prize. Home Depot Free Kids Workshops: Take your kids to The Home Depot and let them get hands-on with a workshop project. Start a conversation about the meaning of Veteran’s Day, as they Build a Veterans Day Jet, or teach them the basics of working with tools, while letting them take pride in building a functional School House Bank during these FREE hands-on workshops. Workshops are designed for children ages 5–12. Registration required.

Lowe’s Free Build and Grow Kids Clinics: Kids have the opportunity to build a wooden project and will receive their own apron, goggles, patch and more! The next clinic will be held on November 14th to build a Lowes Pullback #48 car!

Akron Children’s Hospital Tree Festival: Each year, more than 200 decorated trees, 85,000 strings of lights, and countless other holiday creations are displayed at the John S. Knight Center to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital. Proceeds support patient care programs, education and research.

Deck the Hall: Bring the whole family to enjoy one of Ohio’s largest and most spectacular holiday traditions, Deck the Hall. The estate is illuminated inside and out with over 800,000 lights and the historic Manor House is decorated and inspired by the theme of “Home for the Holidays.” DAZZLE is a fantastic outdoor light show animated to new music each year and Gingerbread Land, their popular Playgarden is “dressed up” for the holiday season.
