On December 5, Summit DD partnered with Akron’s Lock 3 to create the area’s first disability-friendly Winter Fest event. Countless families came together to enjoy visits with Santa, accessible ice skating, sledding, cookie decorating and more.
“Our focus was to take this community event that we are so lucky to have right in the heart of Akron and do what we can to make it accessible to everyone,” shared Summit DD’s Senior Manager of Children’s Services, Tina Overturf. “It was amazing to see so many people come together and enjoy the season,” she continued.
Close to twenty staff members from Summit DD’s Children’s Services department volunteered to assist families throughout the three hour event. Many of them brought their very own kids to join in the fun. The Italian-American Professional Businessmen’s Association also volunteered their time by bringing Santa and several of his little helpers to visit with families.
Plus, the folks at Winter Fest enjoyed a performance from the Summit County Special Olympics ice skating team, and attendees watched a group of local artists with disabilities unveil their banner for the Lock 3 Countdown to First Night advent-style calendar.
Be on the lookout for future events from Summit DD and Lock 3…because this is only the beginning of a great partnership for community inclusion!
