Today it was discovered that one of the Texas nurses who tested positive for the Ebola virus recently visited the Akron area, prior to exhibiting symptoms. While there have not been any confirmed cases in Ohio, or the northern part of the U.S., we felt it important to share facts about the Ebola virus to keep people informed, as well as share Summit DD’s current health protocols designed to protect those we support. Health officials do not expect to see anything related to this illness close to home, but we believe that preparation and knowledge is our best defense.
Our standard health protocols at Summit DD Centers are proactive. Anyone attending a Summit DD Center-Based program exhibiting a temperature of 99.5F or higher will be sent home. In an abundance of caution, on-staff nurses have been instructed to notify a supervisor if any individuals exhibit a low grade fever and any one of the other symptoms listed in the Summit County Health Department Ebola fact sheet.

While health officials do not anticipate any cases in the area, we will continue to monitor the situation and report any relevant information as it relates to Summit DD or those we support and their families.
