Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Summit DD) has completed the necessary approvals to sell its Barberton Center at 501 W. Hopocan Avenue to the City of Barberton. The City of Barberton plans to renovate the building into its future City Hall, ensuring the property continues serving the Barberton community for years to come.
The opportunity began when the City of Barberton approached Summit DD about purchasing the building. Following independent appraisals, careful evaluation of the agency’s long-term operational needs, and approvals by the City of Barberton, Summit DD Board, and Summit County Council, the parties reached an agreement on a purchase price of $3.1 million. The negotiated price recoups the investment Summit DD made in renovating, furnishing and equipping the Barberton building.
“This transaction represents thoughtful stewardship of public resources,” said Superintendent Lisa Kamlowsky. “It restores taxpayer investment, reduces future operating costs, and ensures this building continues serving the public in a meaningful way.”
The Barberton building has served as secondary administrative building since Summit DD transitioned away from providing direct services in 2018. After a review of long-term building needs, Summit DD determined it can effectively support nearly 6,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities throughout Summit County with one primary administrative building in Cuyahoga Falls.
“Our mission has never been about a building, it has always been about people,” Kamlowsky said. “Every day, our employees support individuals and families where they live, work, learn and participate in their communities. We are confident we can continue delivering those services while operating more efficiently with one administrative location.”
As closing details are finalized, Summit DD will share any information that affects staff, individuals served, families, and community partners. For questions about the sale of the building Contact Us.
