Building Healthy Habits at Each Stage
It’s never too early to start building good toothbrushing habits! Making oral care part of your baby’s daily routine can help them learn that brushing is a normal part of getting ready for bed.
Before your baby has teeth, gently wipe their gums with a clean, damp cloth. Once those first teeth begin to appear (often around 6 months) you can introduce a small, age-appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste.
As your child gets older, let them take an active role in brushing. Around age 2, many toddlers become interested in doing things themselves. So let them! Give brushing a try. Just remember that they’ll still need your help. Parents should continue brushing after their child has had a turn (often until around age 7) to make sure all of their teeth are cleaned well.
Make Brushing Work for Your Child
Every child is different, and some may need a little extra support with brushing their teeth and oral hygiene. An electric toothbrush may be helpful for some children because it can make brushing quicker and provide gentle vibration that some children find calming. Talk with your child’s dentist about what type of toothbrush and toothpaste are best for your child.
