The first group home for women with disabilities opened in 1979.
Earlier in the decade, the Reymann Home in Akron opened for men with disabilities. This was the first step toward giving people with disabilities the freedom to live in their own community. It allowed people to begin moving out of cold, impersonal state institutions and into neighborhoods. The idea of inclusion began to spread, which eventually led to the first group home for women being opened in 1979.
