Games can be a great way to learn new skills. Whether you are working on listening skills or teaching your kids about safety, this traditional game is a favorite for all generations and is sure to be fun for the whole family!
Play: Stop and Go
To play “Stop and Go” stand apart from your child when you say “go” have them run to you, act like an animal, jump in place, dance or walk backwards. When you say “stop” the child must freeze and stay in that spot until you say ‘go’ again. You can model freezing in silly positions to make it fun. Vary the length of time between when you say stop and when you say go, make it challenging by hiding.
Playing the stop and go game is a great way to teach your child listening skills, how to follow directions, and to listen for the words stop and go while playing outside.
Focus on Safety
Ways to adapt this game into safety skills: A car magnet stop sign placed on your car where your child can place their hand on the magnet and keep it there is a great way to help them stand still by the car as you open doors, etc. Remember in a busy parking lot safety is always first and having your child’s hand is always best practice.
