Ohio has long been a leader in exploring technology-based and remote support solutions for people with disabilities. These supports can offer powerful benefits, like more privacy for individuals, reduced service costs, and less strain on DSP staffing capacity. But turning this vision into reality has been a challenge due to barriers like infrastructure needs, training, and even adoption. That is, until now. Thanks to out-of-the-box thinking, vision, and a grant, Summit County now has its first local provider capable of providing and supporting remote support services!

Summit DD proudly teamed up with Summit Artspace to host our 2nd Annual Inclusive Akron Artwalk! The theme for this year’s inclusive artwalk was Creative Voices: Empowering Artists of All Abilities. Nearly nearly 400 attendees joined us to celebrate DD Awareness Month and the arts– all with accessibility and empowering artists of all abilities at the heart of the evening!

Summit DD kicked off Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with a bang! Thousands of people across multiple counties united to celebrate Inclusion Day…showing that our community is strongest when everyone is included! Together we truly “painted” the town orange!

In celebration of our dedicated team members, Summit DD hosted our annual Employee Recognition Breakfast. We recognized the amazing efforts of 45 employees with a combined service of more than 700 years! Summit DD also presented the third annual Core Value Awards. Over 40 team members were nominated for exemplifying our values of Trust, Respect, Collaboration, Innovation, Inclusion and Excellence.

In celebration of Assistive Technology Awareness Month, we’d like to recognize Evan! Earlier this year, Evan became Summit DD’s SMART Home Tech Champion after an extensive search and interview process. Evan now lives in the SMART Home and provides weekly tours to peers with developmental disabilities, community partners, and more. “I used to not see myself as someone with a disability. I separated myself from them in my mind. Now that I have met so many others through my tours, I realize we are all the same and we can help one another!” shared Evan.

Meet Sam! Sam and his family tapped into essential Summit DD services and tech supports so he could attend Kent State University’s Sport Administration Program. Summit DD and Medina DD, in partnership with We Thrive Together, teamed up to create an interactive exposition showing how assistive technology and remote support can increase independence, improve quality of life, and provide access to the community. Nearly 700 attendees joined us for our very first Interactive Tech Expo!
